Lexmark International, Inc. (NYSE: LXK) today announced a Volunteer Time Off Program that gives each of its full-time U.S. employees up to three days of paid time away from work each year to volunteer in their local community. Part-time employees will receive up to one-and-a-half days. The program enables Lexmark employees to serve in their local communities without having to use personal vacation time.

According to Jeri Stromquist, Lexmark’s vice president of Human Resources, creating the Volunteer Time Off Program is a concrete example of the company’s vision of corporate citizenship. “With busy work schedules and lives, it can be difficult for our employees to find the extra hours to volunteer their time and talents to organizations they feel strongly about,” says Stromquist. “The Lexmark Volunteer Time Off program allows us to not only support our employees’ volunteerism efforts and commitment to our communities, but it also helps us offer yet another way for our employees to balance their work and home life.”

According to a recent study conducted by the Urban Institute and supported by the USA Freedom Corps, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and The UPS Foundation, more than 80 percent of nonprofit organizations involve volunteers in their activities. And 60 percent of nonprofits report having difficulty recruiting volunteers during the workday.

“At Lexmark, the volume of requests for volunteers and support continues to increase significantly,” Stromquist said. “This new Volunteer Time Off program is an innovative way for Lexmark to invest in our employees and their interests, while helping to meet key community needs. It’s a win-win for Lexmark and for the communities where our employees live and work.”

Lexmark also announced the Volunteer of the Year Award to honor the top Lexmark volunteer from across the globe with a $5,000 contribution to the nonprofit organization of the employee’s choice. Lexmark’s Volunteer of the Year Award will encourage and recognize volunteerism, while supporting the company’s value of corporate citizenship.
