Lexmark International, Inc. (NYSE: LXK) today announced its intention to build a new manufacturing facility in Juarez. The site, which is expected to be operational in early 2005, will produce laser toner cartridges and their components used in the company’s laser printers.

Lexmark officials and Mexican dignitaries participated in a ceremony today to set the first stone for Lexmark’s new manufacturing campus. The ceremony comes one day after an official dinner in the state capital of Chihuahua City hosted by Governor Patricio Martinez Garcia. Governor Martinez made the first official announcement of Lexmark’s investment in Juarez at that dinner, and he also attended today’s ceremony.

“The relationship we have developed with Governor Martinez and the people of Chihuahua is strong and mutually beneficial,” said Paul J. Curlander, Lexmark’s chairman and chief executive officer. “We are pleased with this partnership as can be seen by our latest investment here – an investment not only in bricks, mortar and high-tech equipment, but in the people of Chihuahua.”

Lexmark has had a presence in the region since the mid-1990s, and currently operates four plants (three in Juarez and one in the city of Chihuahua) with thousands of employees in the state of Chihuahua.

The plant announced today sits on 40 hectares (approximately 100 acres) in the southeastern portion of Juarez, and will be comprised of multiple buildings. No figures were released for the eventual size of its workforce, but several hundred will be employed there within the first year of operation.
