Settings tab

Scan Settings

Select a preset scan setting according to the color and document type for your scan.

  • Color Photo - Print. Scan a color photo for printing.
  • Color Photo - Web. Scan a color photo for use on the Web.
  • Black & White Photo. Scan a black and white photo.
  • Black Text. Scan a text only document.

Custom Settings:

Customize your scan settings instead of using a preset scan setting.

Color Depth

Select the amount of color you want in the scanned image. Options are:

  • 24 bit color. Best for scanning color photographs or multicolor charts and graphics.
  • 8 bit grayscale. Best for scanning magazine and newspaper articles or black and white photographs.
  • 1 bit monochrome. Best for scanning black text.

Resolution (DPI)

Choose a dpi (dots per inch) value from the pop-up menu. Valid values are from 75 to 9600 dpi.

Note:

Scanning resolution settings tend to be much lower than printing resolution settings. Scanning a photograph at 300 dpi results in a very good quality printout. Adjusting the dpi settings higher than this can result in very slow operation of the scanner.

Descreen Magazine or Newspaper

Remove wavy patterns from magazines or newspapers. Many types of printed media are created using a process known as screen printing. The resulting documents are made up of many small dots that, when viewed from a distance, form the document's contents. This screen printing pattern of dots is often exaggerated by scanning. The result is typically noticeable as a geometrical pattern appearing in what should be solid colors. Descreening helps remove the screen printing pattern of dots. Choose from Photo, Text, Art Print, Magazine, Newspaper, or None as your descreen option.

Adjustments tab

Brightness

Adjust the lightness or darkness of the item you are scanning.

Contrast

Adjust the detailing and tone of the image as it is set off against a light or dark background. Increasing contrast makes light colors lighter and dark colors darker.

Gamma

Increase or decrease the color correction curve. Decreasing the gamma causes more ink to be placed on the page, and darkens your printed document. Increasing gamma causes less ink to be placed on the page, and lightens your printed document.

Blur/Sharpen

Adjust the level of sharpness of the scanned image.

Invert Colors

Reverse the colors of your image. The effect created is similar to that on a film negative.

Mirror Left/Right

Produce a mirror image of your document.

Rotate

Shift between portrait and landscape orientation, and rotate your image incrementally using the up and down arrows.

Defaults

Reset the Adjustment controls to the factory default settings.

Preview area

See a preview of the image. Some settings in the Scan Preview dialog are interactive, so you can readily view the changes on the image as you adjust the settings. In general, you need to click Preview again in order to apply your settings. Your image is re-scanned, and your recent changes are shown on the image in the preview area.

Auto-crop

Select or clear Auto-crop to turn auto-cropping on or off. Adjust the slider fine tune auto-cropping.

Width, height, and file size display

See the dimension of your scanned image. Select your preferred unit of measurement from the pop-up menu.
