Co-Op / Internship

Q: What is the difference between an AYPT, Co-op, and Summer Intern?
A: An academic year part time (AYPT) student works for Lexmark all year on a part-time basis and attends college in Central Kentucky. A co-op works for Lexmark for usually three terms and receives college credit for the work experience. A summer intern works only during the summer session and may or may not receive college credit.

Q: Are the student positions paid?
A: Yes. All student positions are paid. Your total credit hours earned and length of service with Lexmark are used to determine your rate of pay.

Q: How many students come to Lexmark as interns?
A: We usually have about 90 students employed at our Lexington headquarters during the fall and spring, but summer is Lexmark's busiest time for student employment. Typically, we have at least 40 summer interns in addition to the co-op and academic year part time students, peaking around 150.  Of course, these numbers vary from year to year, depending on a number of factors.

Q: Will the work be hands-on?
A: Yes, the work is definitely hands-on. In most cases, you are doing work that is similar to that of regular employees, depending on your experience, skills and education.  We want you to get as much experience as possible while you are here with us.

Q: What is the length of time required for me to work as an intern?
A: Summer interns are usually on board with Lexmark for three to four months between May and August.

Q: How can I apply for a student position?
A: To apply, please complete the online application. Be sure to specify what type of student program you are interested in: AYPT, co-op, or intern.

Q: What majors do you hire for student positions?
A: We hire mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, chemical engineering, material science, chemistry, computer science, finance, accounting, economics, marketing, sales, and some general business.

Student Benefits

Q: Will I receive any housing assistance?
A: Lexmark provides housing for all students who live more than 50 miles outside of Lexington.

Q: Will I be required to have a roommate?
A: No. Lexmark provides each student with a private room, complete with a kitchenette. While you can enjoy your privacy, you are also located close to other interns and co-ops and will have plenty of opportunity for interaction.

Q: Do the students participate in activities as a group?
A: Yes. We set up many different activities for the students to participate in during the summer, as well as throughout the year. Some of our popular activities are sporting tournaments, pizza parties, bowling, movies, Paramount's Kings Island, and Lexington Legends baseball games, just to name a few.

Q: Will I be allowed any time off?
A: Yes.  Students are eligible for paid time off on all Lexmark holidays, including but not limited to Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Christmas. You are also eligible to accrue paid personal days.
