The Packaging Engineer creates, tests, implements, and maintains packaging designs that are an integral part of the organization’s Hardware Product Development process. 

The individual works as a member of the global packaging team within the Research and Development organization.  They work with internal resources and packaging suppliers to achieve functional packaging goals.

  • Create innovative solutions for packaging designs and processes that meet or exceed global sustainability legislation.
  • Oversee and manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing.
  • Creates and maintains packaging parts and BOM’s using PLM software.
  • Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging.
  • Works with sourcing teams to evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Work closely with global suppliers, engineering, product management, operations, and sourcing.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams, to deliver new products to market.
  • Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to optimize packaging supply base for cost, quality, regionalization, standardization and compliance with customer, regulatory, and internal requirements.
  • Work with the manufacturing organization to ensure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability.
  • Conducts testing to ensure that packaging meets internal as well as external specifications.



Reports to the Design Center and Packaging Manager. Works in conjunction with the Product Engineering, Component Engineering, Supply Chain, Sourcing, Marketing and Sales departments.

Ability to communicate with management, coworkers and customers is crucial. Regular use of the MS Teams and e-mail for communication is essential.



A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or packaging engineering is required. Must have 5+ years of experience in industrial or consumer packaging. Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISTA, ASTM, etc.), drafting and specification standards is required. Demonstrable proficiency in 3D CAD software is needed.  Experience working in a Distribution Packaging lab environment is desirable.

Problem solving and decision-making skills are necessary. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Must have good communication skills, orally and in writing. Understanding of process improvement, quality improvement concepts is needed; Should have experience in rapid prototyping. Must be able to demonstrate project management skills experience.  A working knowledge of sustainability standards and regulations such as EPEAT, Blue Angel, and Circular Economy is a bonus.



Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. 

Use of common test equipment is required;

  • Lansmont shock table, vibration, free-fall drop
  • LAB compression tester and incline impact sled
  • Data Technology M3000 sample table
  • High speed video equipment, rub tester, ECT tester, Mullen tester
